Job purpose
Sunmarke School is seeking a passionate, skilled, and motivated music teacher to deliver high-quality music education across the primary and secondary phases. The successful candidate will contribute to curriculum delivery, student musical progression, and the wider cultural life of the school, ensuring music is a visible and valued part of the school community.
Department overview
The music department is well resourced with a wide range of instruments, purpose-built music classrooms, and a structured peripatetic and extracurricular music programme. The department supports classroom instruction, performances, ensembles, and school-wide events.
Key responsibilities
Teaching & learning
Deliver engaging, differentiated music lessons across primary and secondary year groups
Plan and deliver lessons covering performance, composition, listening, and music theory
Deliver structured music programmes aligned with internationally recognized music education frameworks such as Trinity, ABRSM, or equivalent, ensuring clear progression pathways for students
Inspire students of varying musical abilities and backgrounds
Maintain high expectations for achievement, participation, and behaviour
Student development & assessment
Use assessment effectively to monitor student progress and inform teaching
Identify and nurture musical potential in students across phases
Prepare students for performances, assemblies, concerts, and school productions
Provide constructive feedback to students and contribute to parent communication where required
Co-curricular & enrichment
Lead and support music clubs, ensembles, rehearsals, and productions
Contribute to concerts, showcases, and wider school events
Support the development of a strong musical culture across the school
Professional responsibilities
Work collaboratively with the head of department and teaching colleagues
Contribute positively to departmental planning and curriculum development
Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues
Support student enrolment, trial lessons, and progression into structured music pathways where required
Uphold safeguarding, child protection, and pastoral responsibilities at all times

Essential
Formal qualification in music
Proven experience working with children primary and/or secondary level

Ability to support instrumental instruction and/or ensemble direction (choir, band, orchestra)
