Principal Civil Engineer - Infrastructure

Leeds or Newcastle Office - Hybrid role - 3 days per week in office.

We are seeking an experienced Principal Civil Engineer to lead the planning, design, and delivery of a range of infrastructure projects. This is a client facing role where you will be involved from the outset of a project by preparing quality bids and managing client relations through delivery, project management and close out. This role involves a wide range of project types/sectors and clients overseeing construction and maintenance of critical facilities such as roads, railways, bridges, dams, pipelines, power plants, and sewage systems. You will play a key role in growing the UK Transport business, shaping engineering solutions that meet functional, regulatory, and sustainability standards.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineering Solutions Design: Develop innovative engineering solutions aligned with design briefs and regulatory standards.
  • Work Winning: Preparing quality bid submissions, client management, project management
  • Standards & Specifications: Contribute to drafting and evaluating engineering standards and specifications.
  • Project Management: Deliver small to medium scale projects within established plans.
  • Process Design: Define and improve processes, equipment, and systems for optimal cost and quality.
  • Contract Management: Manage relationships with service providers to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Product Development: Deliver solutions that meet customer needs using best-in-class approaches.
  • Knowledge Management: Utilize established systems to share and apply engineering knowledge.
  • Capability Building: Maintain professional accreditation and stay updated on industry best practices.
  • Engineering Inspections: Conduct inspections and recommend remedial actions for compliance.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify and implement process improvements.
  • Client Management: Build strong relationships with clients and support senior colleagues with key accounts.
  • People: Good people skills and an ability to manage internal and external stakeholders.

 

What We’re Looking For

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or related discipline and be either chartered or approaching chartered status.

Experience:

  • 6–10 years of civil engineering experience.
  • Proven ability to supervise junior engineers (7–12 months minimum).
  • Highway/infrastructure design.
  • Highway/infrastructure drainage design. 

Technical Skills:

  • Advanced expertise in engineering design, development, testing, and compliance.
  • Application of designs to Highways England/DMRB, Water UK Sewerage Sector Guidance and Local Authority design guidance.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering software and tools including Civils 3D & Infodrainage.
  • Project scheduling and business requirements analysis.
  • Project management
