We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced Consultant General Surgeon to provide comprehensive surgical care to patients in accordance with international clinical standards and UAE healthcare regulations. The successful candidate will diagnose, evaluate, and perform elective and emergency surgical procedures while ensuring the highest standards of patient safety, quality of care, and clinical excellence.
The Consultant General Surgeon will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver evidence-based treatment and contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives within the hospital.
Key responsibilities
Clinical responsibilities
Assess, diagnose, and manage patients requiring general surgical intervention.
Perform elective and emergency general surgical procedures, including minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgeries where applicable.
Conduct pre-operative assessments and formulate individualized treatment plans.
Provide comprehensive post-operative management and follow-up care.
Manage surgical emergencies in accordance with hospital protocols.
Interpret laboratory and diagnostic imaging findings.
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions.
Ensure appropriate documentation of patient assessments, treatment plans, operative notes, and discharge summaries.
Maintain accurate medical records in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
Surgical procedures
Perform procedures including, but not limited to:
Laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy
Appendectomy
Hernia repair (open and laparoscopic)
Breast surgery
Thyroid surgery
Soft tissue surgeries
Gastrointestinal surgeries
Colorectal procedures
Minor and major abdominal surgeries
Emergency trauma surgery (within hospital scope)
Patient care responsibilities
Deliver patient-centered, evidence-based surgical care.
Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, surgical risks, and post-operative care.
Obtain informed consent in compliance with regulatory requirements.
Ensure patient safety and adherence to infection prevention protocols.
Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives.
Administrative responsibilities
Participate in departmental meetings and hospital committees.
Contribute to policy development and implementation.
Support accreditation activities (JCI, DOH, etc.).
Maintain compliance with hospital policies and UAE healthcare regulations.
Participate in on-call rotation as assigned.
Teaching & research
Mentor junior physicians, residents, and medical students.
Participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities.
Contribute to clinical research, publications, and presentations where applicable.
Promote evidence-based surgical practice.
Quality & safety
Adhere to international surgical safety standards.
Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings.
Report adverse events and implement corrective actions.
Ensure compliance with infection control and patient safety guidelines.
Requirements
Qualifications & requirements
Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS/MBChB or equivalent).
Completion of an approved residency in General Surgery.
Specialist/Board Certification in General Surgery from a recognized international board. Examples include:
Arab Board
European Board
American Board
Canadian Board
Australian Fellowship
UK CCT/CESR with GMC Specialist Registration
FRCS (or equivalent)
Experience
Minimum 5–8 years of post-board certification experience as a Consultant General Surgeon (depending on licensing eligibility).
Experience in tertiary care hospitals preferred.
Experience in laparoscopic surgery is essential.
Trauma surgery experience is an advantage.
Licensing requirements
Must be eligible for or hold a Department of Health (DOH) Abu Dhabi Consultant license.
Data Flow verification and UAE medical licensing requirements must be fulfilled.
Preferred qualifications
Fellowship training in a subspecialty (e.g., colorectal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, upper GI surgery, breast surgery, endocrine surgery, bariatric surgery, or trauma surgery).
Robotic surgery experience.
Academic teaching or research experience.
Publications in peer-reviewed journals.
