Overview of the role
The Operations Associate – Overnight Shift (Backfilling) plays a critical role in ensuring the store is fully replenished, organized, and ready for trading each morning. Working during overnight hours, the role is responsible for receiving deliveries, replenishing shelves, maintaining inventory accuracy, executing merchandising standards, and ensuring the store is presented to the highest M&S standards before opening.
Working closely with the Store Operations team, the Operations Associate supports efficient stock flow, minimizes stock loss, and ensures excellent product availability across all departments. Success in this role is measured through replenishment productivity, stock accuracy, merchandising standards, inventory control, and operational efficiency.
What you will do
Stock replenishment & backfilling
Replenish shelves across all store departments during overnight operations to ensure maximum product availability before store opening.
Backfill products from the stockroom to the sales floor following store replenishment priorities.
Ensure shelves are fully stocked, front-faced, and presented according to M&S merchandising standards.
Prioritize replenishment of promotional lines, seasonal products, and fast-moving items.
Ensure all replenishment activities are completed before the start of trading.
Inventory management
Receive and process daily deliveries accurately and efficiently.
Verify product quantities and report discrepancies or damaged stock.
Maintain stock accuracy by following company inventory procedures.
Support stock counts, inventory audits, and stock investigations.
Ensure stock is stored safely and organized within the stockroom.
Merchandising & store standards
Execute planograms and merchandising guidelines across all departments.
Ensure products are correctly priced and shelf labels are accurate.
Maintain high standards of store presentation and housekeeping.
Remove damaged, expired, or discontinued products from the sales floor.
Prepare promotional displays and seasonal merchandising before store opening.
Operational excellence
Ensure stock movement is completed safely and efficiently.
Operate stock handling equipment in accordance with company procedures.
Follow all health & safety policies during replenishment activities.
Support store operational projects, layout changes, and seasonal resets.
Complete assigned replenishment targets within agreed timelines.
Stockroom operations
Organize stockroom locations for efficient stock retrieval.
Ensure stock is stored according to company standards.
Support waste reduction and stock loss prevention initiatives.
Maintain clean, safe, and organized stockroom areas.
Dispose of packaging materials in line with company recycling procedures.
Team collaboration
Work closely with Store Management and Operations teams to deliver overnight replenishment plans.
Communicate stock issues, replenishment challenges, and operational concerns.
Support colleagues across departments where required.
Attend team briefings and operational updates.
